Wuhan Wood Engraving Ship


Noted all over the word, Wuhan wood engraving ship with distinct style is a kind of elegant wood sculpture, which was originated by Long Yunhua, an old artisan from Wuhan Artwork Carving Factory. Having learnt from his father in childhood, he dedicated all his life to manufacture of wood engraving ships. With careful observation and innovational spirit, he successively engraved more than sixty ships in different water areas and with different styles, such as Hubei Kuazi ship, small-sized Xing River ship, Ningbo three-sailed ship, Hunan flat top ship, dragon and phoenix ship, Guizhou passenger ship, imperial inspector official ship and Chuan River sparrow tail ship. 「Liang Hongyu Warship」 engraved according to the history story of heroine Liang Hongyu fighting against Jin, highlights the battle atmosphere in the ship and the heroic bearing of Liang Hongyu at the fore, which has a powerful artistic appeal. Another famous work 「Dragon Boat in Dragon Boat Festival」 is a precious exhibit in Hubei Hall of the Great Hall of People. In 1963, Central Studio of News Reels Production produced a documentary of Long Yunhua and his precious artworks, and he passed away the next year. His son Long Congfa and prentices Cheng Chuchun and Pan Zhengchun who inherited and developed his skills have grown to be new experts of Wuhan wood engraving ship. The 「Dragon and Phoenix Ship」 engraved by Long Congfa with rosewood with peculiar model and folk mythical color was purchased by a foreign guest at a high price when it was exhibited in the Wuhan Artwork Building. And the delicate 「Jimei Flower Boat」 with the flavor of canoe in water villages of south Fujian engraved by Cheng Chuchun got a high praise from tourists from Fujian. While 「Treasure Ship in Zhenhai」 engraved by Pan Zhengbin like a palace on water grasped more admiration when exhibited in Paris. Wuhan wood engraving ship won recognition award in the First National Appraisal Conference of Tourism Souvenirs in 1981. And the 「Zheng He Treasure Ship」 engraved by Long Congfa was well received by the attendees when exhibited in the Autumn Fair Chinese Commodities in 1985.
