A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO
———— WUHAN MUSEUM
Located on 373 Qingnian Rd , Hankou, Wuhan Museum is 300 miles west of Hankou railway station. It formally opened to the outside world on October 1st, 2001. It has a gross floors area of 17 834m2 , with 600m2 exhibition area (of which 1000m2 is the exchanging exhibition hall). With its solemn and magnificient building, which combines the elegant oriental culture with modernized functions, the Museum affords a splendid view.
Wuhan is a renowned historical and cultural city in China . Through the ages our diligent and resourceful forefathers left us substantial material civilization and splendid spiritual treasury. For the purpose of exhibiting the cultural history of Wuhan in an exact, realistic and direct way, and enabling visitors to get to know the local historical development of Wuhan so as to drink in its stately and luxurious cultural atmosphere, the Museum puts on a large serial exhibition of the local historythe exhibition on 3 special subjects of DAHW (Display of the Ancient History of Wuhan), AMW (Approaching Modern Wuhan), and Displays of CRTPD (Cultural Relics Trophies of the Past Dynasties), ACA(Ancient Ceramic Art), and PCAMQD(Painting and Calligraphic Arts of the Ming and the Qing Dynasties 1368-1911). Through the exhibition the Museum manifests to its visitors the distant, dignified, varied and colourful ancient Chinese civilization, and elegant and magnificient Jianghan regional culture, which is a blending of the culture of all sides.
DAHW consists of the 5 parts of the Dawn of Jianghan(pre-historical period), Perfect charm of the Shang Dynasty (c.16th-11th B.C) and Graceful Bearing in the State of Chu(ancient Hubei) (The period of the Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasties c. 11th century 256 B.C.),Military Key Post(the period of the Qin, the Han, the Wei, the Jin, and the Northern and Southern Dynasties 221 B.C. — 589 A .D.), A City of Land and Water (the period of the Sui, the Tang, the Song and the Yuan Dynasties 518—1368),and the Thoroughfare Leading to Nine Provinces(the period of the Ming and the Qing Dynasties, and prio to Hankou's opening to commercial port). The exhibition takes gorgeous ancient relics as the dominant key, bases itself on historical data, and regards science as the criterion. With the display of bountiful historical relics, the restorations of the real original scenes, the application of advanced digital techniques, the exact backgrounds of historical materials and the exquisite artistic creations, the process of the development of the Wuhan area from pre-historical barbarism into a prosperous commercial and trade city in the Ming and the Qing Dynasties appears practically and distinctly before the visitors. AMW(from the time of Hankou's opening to commercial port to that before the Revolution of 1911)indicates the path that Wuhan followed, at the historical junture, from a traditional feudal town into a modern metropolis. It actually gives a definite and vivid description of the evolution in Wuhan's modern civilization by means of precious historical relics, rich historical data and apt mothods of demonstration, rendering visitors a completely new look of Wuhan, which owns striking regional peculiarities and is known as "the thoroughfare leading to 9 provinces".
The 3-special-subject art exhibition of CRTPD, ACA and PCAMQD, in particular, respectively displays in the artistic point of view the multi-category historical relics of bronze ware, jade articles, bamboo, wood and ivory carvings, inkstones, seals, snuff bottles, enamel and pottery. The wonderful harmony of precious cultural relics, long distant history, modern technique of display, quiet and comfortable artistic atmosphere……the Museum provides an ideal imagination space for its visitors.
In addition to the 5 exhibitions on the first and second floors, there is specially an exchange hall on the third. Since the opening of the Museum, more than 10 temporary exhibitions have been staged and introduced here, such as Exhibition of Painting and Calligraphic Arts in Modern Era, Exhibition of Zhongshan ship's Salvaged Relics, A Special Exhibition of China's Cherished Diplomatic Gifts, Exhibition of Unearthed Relics from Han Tomb at Mawangdui of Hunan Province, Yunnan National Costume and Trappings Exhibition, Buddhism Culture and Art Exhibition, etc. All this enriches to the greatest extent the contents of exhibitions in Wuhan Museum , and meets different needs of the visitors.
WM has copious collectious, which are diversified and amount to 50 000 and more pieces. Of the over 2 000 exhibited exquisite articles are private rare articles imperially made by the fabricating office of the Qing Dynasty imperial palace, masterpieces by celebrities and past masters, some unearthed relics of greatest worth to archaeological studies, and perfect-craftsmanship treasures handed down from ancient times. Of the bronze ware, Shang cross-holed jar with animal face design was unearthed in Panlong City , ruins of shang Dynasty (c.16th-11th B.C.) in Huangpi district of Wuhan. It is an important datum in kind for research on the historical development of the city of Wuhan; the inscription of the Eastern Han Dynasty's (25-220) Book of Songs on the dual-typed divine-animaled mirror is the very Lu poems that failed to be handed down as early as in the Western Jin Dynasty (265-316) , Such is authenticated by Lo Fuyi , famous expert in epigraphy. Its preciousness speaks for itself , as it is rediscovered after an absence of more than 1 700 years. Of the jade ware, the white jade pot with two phoenixes crossing necks has on its back the golden seal characters in "imperial made during Emperor Qianlong's Reign". It is a top-quality ancient jade piece, an imperial palace piece drifting into the world of commons. Unearthed at the town of Shekou in Huangpi in 1986, the celadon depressed castle of the times of the Three Kingdoms (220-280) is a typical epitome of the landlord manor economy of the time. The shadowy blue porcelain gourd-ridged handled pot made in Husi kiln of the Song Dynasty (420-479) was unearthed in the ruins of Husi Kiln in Wuchang County . The discovery of the kiln supplies a long-term gap of "no porcelain kiln in Hubei " in the studies of Song porcelain. The Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) blue and white porcelain plum vase with "The Drawing of Four Lovers"(together with the flowers they loved: Wang Xizhi, orchid;Tao Yuanming, Chrysanthemum; Zhou Dunyi, lotus; and Iin Heqing, plum, to show pureness and loftiness of gentlemen) is unusually rare and of top quality of the Yuan Dynasty blue and white porcelain vases. Of the calligraphy and paintings, there are such works by famous calligraphers and painters of the Ming and the Qing Dynasties as the cursive script by Wen Zhengming, "Spending Summer at Leisure in Bamboo-Parasol Groves" by Qiu Ying, "Drawing of the Temple of Mausoleum of the Yellow Emperor" by Huang Ding and "Cats and the Rock" drawn by Zhu Da.
WM has been making constant exploration into improving the cultural quality of the forms of exhibition, striving for the effect of exhibition that changes in the norm and appears new in the change. The exhibition halls on every floor have their definite topical subjects. Of the 3 exhibition halls on the first floor ， the one for CRTPD seeks for a mysterious style of graceful quietness , and , ancientry and scenery pursuit; the ACA hall breeds a bright, plain, smooth and clean style of ceramic art, and the PCAMQD hall entertains a quietly elegant, peaceful and simple propect of traditional Chinese Painting and calligraphy. The second floor is engaged in the basic display of the Museum. Centering around the peculiar historical background of Wuhan , the designer shows artistic ingenuity in the means of exhibition. DAHW and AMW apply in an extensive way new techniques and new materials. By merging intricately historical relics, restored scenes and digital techniques, there come into sight the true, wonderful and fantastic history and reality. Besides, WM has special multimedia touch screen and exhibition-guidiug equipment at the service of visitors. It is right here that visitors can hear the beat of the ancient historical pulse, and feel the longing and pursuit for traditional culture and beauty in the depths of their hearts.
Apart from making full use of the forms of exhibition to demonstrate the long-standing historical culture of the Chinese nation, WM pays due attention to bring its propaganda and education function into full play. The magazine Wuhan Relics and Museum, and the Web Station of the Wuhan Museum are two important propaganda and education fronts, which are the important showpieces for it to train competent professionals, popularize the konwledge of relics, spread the information about relics and the museum and conduct scientific research. WM is an art palace, where people hunt for cultural concern, and come in contact with the inner secret of Chinese culture. It is also an important place to show that WM is so well versed in its work as to be able to do good jobs easily, to widen the sphere of vision, to exhibit elegance and to make intimate friends extensively.
WM exhibits Wuhan 's long-standing historical culture to those who love Wuhan and follow it with interest……
