A Brief Introduction to Education in Wuhan

Talent resources are the primary key to the development of economy in modern times. Taking advantage of resources is the most important strategy for economic development. Education in Wuhan brings up abundant talents and accumulates important resources for the development of Wuhan economy.  


As a key city in education and talents resources across the country, Wuhan boasts such key universities with a nationwide reputation as Wuhan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, etc. Thus an education center focusing on higher education takes shape to provide a solid foundation and guarantee for the development of cultural activities, science, technology and economy in Wuhan.

1. Booming Higher Education


At present, there are 59 colleges and universities (10 invested and established by Wuhan Municipal Government) including 48 general ones and 11 for adults with 637,900 students. With 「increased enrollment」 policy which has been practiced for years, new records were created both in numbers of enrolled students and college students at study in 2003, which amounted to 170,300 and 490,500 respectively, a rise of 26.3% and 25.6% compared to last year. The number of students in general colleges and universities invested and established by Wuhan Municipal Government exceeded 20,000 for the first time and 8 universities established in co-operation with Ministry of Education admitted 1590 more students. The overall admitted students account for 76.8% of those taking college entrance examinations, the highest level historically. Less pressure is given to employment in society as a result of more students admitted to universities.

2. Education contributing to talent resources in Wuhan

Through years』 endeavor, our city has grown to be one of the cities with the largest scale in education all over the country. Laterally, the growth rate of general colleges and universities in Wuhan is very fast in the country since 1999 even faster than that of Bejing and Shanghai, two cities with best education development. Not only its education scale, but also the actual index surpassed the two cities up to 2003. Two eye-catching statistical indexes in education ranked the first place in the country. One is the number of college students at study; the other is the percentage of students at study in general colleges and universities to every 10 thousand people in the city. In addition, the number of general colleges and universities ranks the third next to Beijing (totally 73) and Shanghai (totally 57).

The college students in Wuhan amounted to 390,700 in 2002, 7,900 fewer students than in Beijing, and 490,500 in 2003, over 30,000 more students than in Beijing. The number of students in general colleges and universities out of every 10 thousand people is 632, which was 1.6 times that of Beijing and 2.2 times that of Shanghai. Average growth rates of college students in general colleges and universities out of every 10 thousand people of Beijing, Shanghai were 14.5%, 15.6% respectively, while that of Wuhan was 23.9%, 9.4% and 8.3% higher than those of Beijing and Shanghai.
