Swimming Across the Yangtze River

The large size activity of swimming across the Yangtze River organized in Wuhan dates back to 1930s. In 1956, Chairman Mao Zedong swam across Yangtze River in Wuhan and then wrote down the famous poem Swimming. This event and the poem brought wide reputation to the activity of swimming across the Yangtze River.


Up till now, Wuhan has held 29 events of Swimming across the Yangtze River and the year 1991 witnessed the first 「International Festival of Swimming across the Yangtze Rive」, which aimed to hold various trade exchanges and large size performance shows based on the event of swimming across the Yangtze River. The activities attracted numerous visitors all over the world who took part in swimming across Yangtze River and touring around the three towns of Wuhan city so as to acquaint themselves with ancient Chu culture and the atmosphere of modern civilization.
